Iowa Legal Aid assisted “Michael,” an Iowa homeowner whose roof was severely damaged during the 2020 Iowa derecho, leading to a complex storm damage insurance claim and insurance dispute in Iowa. After the storm, Michael’s homeowners insurance initially approved full roof replacement coverage. However, when the roofing contractor began repairs, additional structural issues were discovered, significantly increasing the total cost and creating a roof repair dispute with the insurance company.
The insurance company later disputed portions of the claim, causing delays and confusion over what repairs were covered. As a result, the contractor stopped work, and disagreements escalated into a broader roofing contractor dispute over approved costs and payment responsibility.
The situation worsened when the contractor filed a contractor lawsuit against a homeowner for unpaid charges. Michael contested the claims, arguing that he had been overcharged, that his insurance policy should cover the additional repair costs, and that the contractor’s incomplete work caused further damage. This included roof holes left exposed during the winter and damage to his gutters.
Facing mounting legal pressure, Michael turned to Iowa Legal Aid for homeowner legal help in Iowa. Iowa Legal Aid provided critical support, helping him respond to the lawsuit, organize documentation, and better understand his rights in the insurance claim dispute. With assistance from a volunteer attorney, he was able to negotiate a fair resolution.
The case was ultimately resolved through a settlement agreement and dismissal of the lawsuit. With help from Iowa Legal Aid services, Michael avoided prolonged litigation and successfully resolved a complicated storm damage insurance claim, roof repair dispute, and contractor lawsuit following the Iowa derecho.
