Iowa Legal Aid Helps Sioux City Resident Keep Critical Disability Benefits

Iowa Legal Aid represented “Ryan,” a man with a serious mental illness who has received social security income (SSI) since childhood. Ryan’s mother, “Kristan,” serves as his representative payee and helped communicate with the legal team throughout the case.

Ryan’s benefits were suddenly threatened after the Social Security Administration determined that his disability had improved and that he was no longer eligible for SSI. The decision was confusing and alarming for the family, particularly because Ryan’s medical and mental health challenges had not improved and in some ways had worsened.

Iowa Legal Aid helped Ryan and Kristan navigate a complicated appeals process that involved multiple hearings, requests for medical evidence, and ongoing issues with payment interruptions and alleged overpayments. During our appeal, the legal team worked to clarify misunderstandings with Social Security, advocate for the continuation of benefits, and present evidence about how Ryan’s mental health conditions severely limit his ability to function in daily life and maintain employment.

After months of advocacy and a hearing before an administrative law judge, the judge issued a favorable decision, reversing the earlier determination and restoring Ryan’s SSI benefits. The ruling confirmed that Ryan continues to meet Social Security’s disability standard.

Ryan and Kristan were extremely grateful for the representation and relieved that his vital benefits were protected.
